They could still smell the blood.

After checking and reloading her guns, she had found enough resolve and purpose to use her own shirt to staunch the bleeding, ripping the fabric out from under the vest and holsters without a second thought to the state of dress it would leave her in. But that couldn't get rid of the smell. Wouldn't. Even after barring the door and locking the windows behind Lee after making his daring departure in search of the vaccine, it had been too late by then. The entire lab had been coated with the scent of Sasuke's blood. And now, every undead corpse within a three block radius was banging against the barricade to get at it. At them. And she only had minutes -- seconds -- left before they would finally break through.

It was only supposed to be a routine sweep of the sector to find food, gather supplies, and search for possible survivors. But as the months ticked on by, food was getting more and more scarce for them and the feeding frenzy was becoming more desperate. Finding survivors became less and less likely with each passing day. And they had underestimated the lengths in which the monsters would go in order to satisfy their hunger for flesh. The zombies had begun to turn on each other. And if they could be so unforgivably vicious to their own, what hope was there for her? For them.

"I can still fight, you know."

Looking up, the young woman shifted a glance to the man propped up against the heating fridge, grim-faced and serious as ever with the remains of his own shirt rolled up just far enough to see the purpling edges of his wound. He couldn't fight like that, she knew. But even as she was pulling up the zipper of her vest, the young gunner found herself considering the idea. And squashed the notion almost as soon as the thought formed. And made sure he was aware of it as well. "You'd bleed out before we cut through even half of those things. And then where would we be, huh?"

He turned his head away at that, suddenly finding the rusted tiles of the floor more interesting. And then it was like a silent movie playing out before her eyes. But then, words had never really been necessary between them. They were a team, after all. And while the outbreak had forced them to abandon the effectiveness of a two-man cell for the convention of a four-man battle formation, the familiarity and complementary aspect of their partnership was something that couldn't be easily forgotten. And through that unique connection, she had been able to hear the words long before they ever came out of his mouth.

"I never asked you to save me."

With a deep furrow of her brows, Tenten kept her eyes trained on him. "You don't have to."

And with a loud snap, she set in the last of the bullet cartridges and slid the gun across the floor, well within his reach. "Remember, aim for the brain."

I'd almost forgotten how much I love them and their undefinable relationship. ;w;

INDEED. HE IS. I'm almost scared that he's running around in my head somewhere... killing off plot bunnies or some crazy junk like that.
