Though the skin had gone almost deathly pale (even paler than his usual) since the incident, he still had a pulse. His body was a few degrees colder than what she was used to feeling, for sure, even colder than her own fingers that were accustomed to the hard metals and icy steel of her guns and knives. Yet, he hadn't shown any signs of turning. And that was about all that mattered to her. Because it meant that there was still time.
It was a foolish plan, Tenten knew, and one that would ultimately get them all killed for it. They had both seen too much in this fight and in this horrible experiment gone wrong to believe otherwise. But Sasuke was her partner, and dammit, she wasn't leaving him to be eaten alive or turned into one of them. Besides, Lee was out there getting the vaccine. -- There was no one faster and more reliable than Lee. -- She just needed to keep them both alive long enough for him to bring it back or to find a means of getting him to the medicine itself. Until then, the young woman would continue to monitor the Uchiha's vitals as best she could.
"Of all the times to place Neji in another squad," she mumbled to herself.
Another rattle of the door had her darting her eyes over the shelter of the counter, her gaze settling warily on the piles of heavy lab equipment and cabinets blocking the only conventional exit. At the time, it had been the best they could manage with only two healthy bodies to barricade the door. But now, with Lee gone, it would only be a matter of time before they would get through.
"I'd worry more about yourself if I were you."
At the faint sound of his voice, she allowed a moment for their eyes to meet, hers worried yet stern, his weakened but still as strong and determined as ever. And despite the red stain spreading across the fabric of his shirt -- despite the unspoken thought she saw in his eyes -- Tenten could not help but stand fast to her stubbornness. "Well, you're not, so just shut your pie-hole."
And as she turned away, the young woman could almost feel the atmosphere grow darker with intent instantly, the weight of his stare pressing in against her chest and burning a hot dot into the back of her skull. And they all worked together to support one simple fact: Injuries aside, he was still in charge. "That's no way to talk to your commanding officer."
"With all due respect, Sir, you're not exactly in the position to be giving orders," Tenten offered, her tone a lot less harsh than before.
This time, a booming thud that seemed to shake the entire room broke her concentration, causing both agents to snap their heads towards the direction of the doors. Followed by another. Then another. And another still. All the while, Tenten's mind could only come to one gripping realization. The equipment covering the doors were giving way. In the middle of setting the fire on her gun, though, she felt Sasuke's fingers clasp around her slender wrist, pulling all attention to the limb and then the body that was still clearly and consciously attached to it.
But her spirit would not bend to the next order she knew was lingering on his unmoving lips. It refused to. "I'm not leaving you."
As if to emphasize that point, Tenten turned her eyes sharply to meet his gaze, keeping her head poised and angled so that the door was still within the edge of her vision and vantage point. And she remained so until he gave a soft sigh of defeat. Because he needed to know -- needed to understand with every scrap of his nerves -- that she was not relenting on this decision. And nothing he could say or do would convince her otherwise.
"Fine, at least take this," he said instead, handing over a reserve round of bullets, "You'll need it."

Eheehee, I loved the "Sasuke was her partner" line. XD <3 As well as all of it, of course, and the "commanding officer" bit was WIN.
SO GLAD YOU WENT ALONG WITH IT. XD <3333

Pfft, YOU KNOW I HAD TO PUT SASUKE IN CHARGE AND MADE HIM HER PARTNER. I couldn't deny Tenten the chance to mockingly calling him 'Sir.' I really couldn't. And the partner thing is another layer to their bond-ish thing what they refuse to call a friendship/relationship. It works, it really does~
IT'S A FUN UNIVERSE TO PLAY IN, ZOMBIELAND, WHERE SHE GETS TO USE GUNS. MUCH LIKE MOBSTERLAND BUT WITH A LOT OF UNDEAD ROAMING AROUND. And a bit more bad words, apparently. xD;
