semchance. They can be cute together any time you want. ♥
Sharing an apartment had been less awkward than she initially thought. It was one thing to be friends and find enough things in common to build on. But such comfortable arrangements tended to shift once a combined living space was thrown into the equation. So she had been rather surprised that it hadn't been so with them. In fact, on most days, she hardly even saw her suite-mate longer than a few moments, and only just enough to exchange brief good mornings and good nights before returning to their fully detailed schedules.
Upon finishing her university courses, Tenten had found herself with a lot more time on her hands. And while it would've been easy to continue on to a finely crafted graduate program at any of the nearby institutions, the problem came when the young woman found herself struggling with an idea of which direction she wished to go for her career path. So it was with the intended idea of filling in her time while she decided that Tenten picked up a tutoring job with Professor Uchiha in the Music Department. And, indeed, it had ended up eating up most of her mornings during the week while evenings and weekends were reserved for her new full-time position at the Far and Wide Cafe as the evening shift managers as well as the newly appointed Head Waitress. Throw in the complications that his schedule brought in as he neared completion of his own degree program and it was like the both of them were living with ghosts.
Mornings like these, though, almost made it worth the chaos; made their few meetings all the more memorable and cherished when they happened.
"Something smells good," she murmured with a light hum of delight as the delicious scents wafted through the apartment.
"The zashiki-warashi finally speaks and makes an appearance before me," came his soft remark, "I am honoured."
"Well, even house spirits need to replenish their energy before continuing on with their guardianship," Tenten quipped in return. And took the opportunity to seat herself at the table where the food had been carefully set out.
"Then I will make a note to give more offerings so as to keep my home well protected."
"Hm... I think this will be enough to cover you for the rest of the month."
The smile he gave was faint, though she knew it would be the best he would give in the situation, and especially at this time in the morning. He wouldn't have enough energy for his other variant smiles for another few hours. Even before coming to him with the idea of renting out a place together, Tenten had been growing familiar with his little ticks of expressions -- because, indeed, that was what they seemed like compared to the obvious displays others would give -- particularly when they had found a common interest in maintaining a balance between work and life.
"Seriously though, what's with all the food?" she inquired, all the while reaching for her chopsticks, "Not that I'm complaining, but is it a special occasion or something?"
He quietly picked up his set as well, pausing for only a moment -- a second or two -- before moving to answer her. "I've been meaning to thank you."
Frank and direct, Tenten was reminded of how contradictory he could be. In speaking and holding a conversation, he was rarely vague in his words. Because he was the sort to speak to perfected clarity so that people would understand the train of thought he was trying to explain. On the other hand, his actions were often underplayed and barely noticeable unless people knew where to look. It was an easy thing to determined who his friends were simply by observing how well someone was able to pick up on his physical cues.
Sometimes, though, there was still a need for elaboration.
"Thank me?" she wondered aloud, "For what?"
Reaching for a slice of winter melon, he paused in his efforts to direct his full attention to her. Raised on tradition and under unique circumstances, Shino had always possessed an extremely polite demeanor. Almost too polite, she thought, sometimes. "I think I'm far past the age where I'd still believe blankets could mysteriously appear out of nowhere."
Here, she gave a soft snerk of amusement at the idea, trying and failing to will away the mental picture that came along with the thought. "I doubt you were ever at that age."
"It's possible that I might've been around age three," the young man mused. And not once did his face seem to falter from it's general neutrality. It almost unnerved her how good he was at maintaining such a disposition under most circumstances. But at the same time, it was one of the things Tenten had always found endearing if not interestingly quirky. "Unfortunately, I don't hold many memories from that time."
"Shame." She took a moment to let the fondness in her voice to fade away before taking her first bite. And then instantly added 'decent cook' as being another one of his charming attributes as the taste of his specially prepared breakfast sent a myriad of pleasant flavors across her tastebuds. It wasn't the sort of cuisine she had been overly exposed to during her stay in Japan -- most likely in indication of his early years spent in Sapporo -- but it was still quite delicious.
Swallowing the mouthful, she decided to make a point to remember and ask him to teach her a recipe or two one day when they both weren't so busy. And then, as she was picking around to see what other delicious morsel she would try next, Tenten's mind wandered back to the initial reason why she was even experiencing such a meal. "...And you're welcome."
Looking up from his plate, the young woman could only smile as he seemed almost caught off guard by the after thought, though he was quick to recover. And there was no ignoring the private smile that seemed to be hidden in the dark recesses of his eyes. "...Thank you."

You probably don't need to say it. But it's nice to hear it all the same. ♥
