At the first sound of a crash -- a vase, she assumed; Fugaku's old office had always possessed way too many vases than normal and there hadn't been enough time to prepare things for the new head of the clan -- Tenten had known instantly the reason behind it. She had seen the elder ushering his younger brother past the double-doors with a bit of urgency. And reluctance. These were the only signs she needed to realize: Itachi had finally decided to tell Sasuke of his choice. And with that revelation dawning, the young woman had instantly dismissed both guards who were standing watch outside of the wooden doors. -- They had spent the majority of their lives under close surveillance. They at least deserved this moment of privacy to themselves. -- After all, as the younger Uchiha's primary bodyguard, Tenten held one of the main authorities over the conduct of his protection. The only other exception to the chain of command was Itachi.

But not for long, she thought with a heavy sense of dread. If things went as planned, he would relinquish that right before even leaving the room.

Another vase shattered with a muted thump against the wall, followed instantly after with a raised voice; most likely Sasuke's. The words were nothing more than dull blasts of noise beyond the thick walls that lined the office. But Tenten didn't need to hear what was being said to feel the passion behind them. To hear the heartache and betrayal.

She cringed at another thud of force before a particularly loud cry -- scream, because there could be no other word to describe it, exactly -- of anger cut through the silence. And then, after a brief pause, came the quiet underplayed turn of the knob. After all the commotion -- all the drama -- Tenten had almost missed hearing the sound, thinking it was nothing more than her imagination playing trips on her fraying conscious. But the swift flow of air and stream of natural light from the floor to ceiling windows that lined one side of the room easily dispelled that belief.

And with a quiet mutter that sounded too much like a dispassionate apology, Itachi emerged.

His steps were swift and determined, moving him past her without hesitation or even a glance of acknowledgment as he headed straight for the elevator. Only by chance or some stroke of luck did she catch sight of the tiny cut just above his left brow. And then the one under his jaw. But, perhaps, the most heartbreaking sight of all was the presumed emptiness she had seen in the young man's eyes. Despite all his efforts and preferences against social engagements or even physical contact, there had always been a warm glimmer of light whenever she looked into his eyes. Sometimes more than that when he became lost in the music of his piano. The weight of seeing that light gone was almost too much to bear.

Letting her emotions get the better of her, there was little Tenten could do to stop her feet from following after him. To keep her arm from reaching out to grab the bend of Itachi's elbow. And even as the gentle grip of her fingers seemed to still his movements, she struggled to find the words -- any words -- to say to him. What was left to say? Absolutely nothing, she thought. At least not on this matter. He had already made his decision long before ever approaching her with the plan and a promise at Fugaku's funeral. And he had told her then that he would leave as soon as things were finally settled. When all his affairs with the clan were in order.

Staring intently and determinedly at the rough lines of his back, Tenten realized there was only one thing she could say to him. "...You have my number."

And as she continued to watch him, she saw the tiniest shift of the young man's head. Maybe even a sliver of his dark eyes as he finally glanced her way for one brief second before turning away once more. "...And you have mine."

After another instance or two, she felt the chill of his fingers as they slowly freed himself from her grip, letting her own hand fall away while he continued down the hall without another thought; without another word until he reached the end and pressed the down button for the elevator. Only then did he give his final command. "...Go. He'll need you now, more than ever."

"...So will you."

He said nothing in response, just simply keeping his back to her as he stepped into the elevator. And then, with the ding of the doors, he was gone. And she was left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives once again.

Tenny....I....I love this. <3 Thank you for this. So much. I will keep it always and it must, must, must be headcanon now. It's such a shame we never got to tool around with Tenny and Itty pre-Fugaku death... <333333

And, also, Itty does want some Tenny time asaps. ASAPS.

Also, it's never too late to play around with Tenny and Itty's relationship pre-Fugaku!Death. It'd be a small timeframe of a few months to half a year if it's after Shirou's death, though. Remember that.

Lol, it's always been headcanon for me. Just like their childhood and the weird sort of awkward/ambiguous triangle between the three of them has always been headcanon for me. When you share that much history, it can't really be avoided.

But I digress.

You're most welcomed and I'm so, SO, SO glad you enjoyed it~ Makes me feel better about writing more (and trust that there will be).

We will. I will. After NaNo is done eating your soul and encompassing your time for the month, yes?
