Reality Check

Title: Reality Check
Type: Fanfic
Fandom: Naruto
Character(s): Tenten, Uchiha Sasuke; brief mentions of Orochimaru
Pairing(s): Maybe a small hint of Sasuke/Tenten if you squint and turn your head sideways
Warning(s): None.
Disclaimer: I own nothing but these words.
Note: Inspired by [ THIS ] thread in which played on the principle established at [livejournal.com profile] laststopgakuen where if a character died, they would be revived within twenty-four hours of their death. Events of the battle altered slightly to fit in where this fic picks up.

Hours after the fact, Tenten could still taste the gritty texture of the dirt on her tongue. Could feel the rough edges of rock and earth shifting between her fingers. Pulling at her clothes. Scratching and scraping against her skin. Dried blood still covered her nails from having to grope and dig her way through the tightly packed soil and clay mixture surrounding the corridor, a hard and taxing endeavor, but one that had been necessary at the time. Such was the curse of a shinobi who possessed better control over the Earth-elemental jutsu styles. But despite the grime that clung to her lithe form, the kunoichi could not feel more proud of herself.

Because she had been able to survive a battle with one of the most powerful shinobi that had ever lived. Not only that, but Tenten had managed to stop him from spreading his disease of a spirit further into Sasuke's psyche. It had taken almost every ounce of her chakra and strength to do so, but the kunoichi had managed it. Barely.

Granted, it was likely that Orochimaru was only at a fraction of his normal power after laying dormant inside of the Uchiha for so long. And had he possessed access to all the strength and abilities within Sasuke's body, there was a good chance that she would never have come out of their fight alive. But things had worked out to her benefit, albeit at a substantial price. Suffice to say, it would be a while before Tenten was fully-capable of living through another round against him. But it was a price she was willing to make if it meant getting her comrade back, both in body and in mind.

Seated on a chair she had dragged from some far corner of the building, Tenten remained quiet and attentive as the minutes ticked by. All the while, Sasuke's unconscious form remained buried chest-deep in the ground where she had left him hours before. Only once after the battle was over did she ever leave his side, and that had been to gather the necessary supplies for the long wait until his scheduled revival. Because indeed, the kunoichi refused to leave Sasuke's body alone where anyone else could take him. And possibly get injured when he finally did wake up. After all, there was no assurance that the battle had weakened Orochimaru's resolve enough for the young Uchiha to take regain control.

She had been in the process of polishing his sword, the Kusanagi blade that he had picked up while allied with the Snake Lord Sannin, when he finally groaned to life again.

Never once since arriving to this strange place had Tenten ever died, though there had been plenty of times she had flirted over the line between the living and the dead. So it was an intriguing mystery and a momentary thought to wonder what it felt like to go from feeling nothing to suddenly experiencing the strong burst of life flowing through the body. But she could speculate about that later.

"For your sake, I hope you're Sasuke," she mumbled, cold and icy to match the sharp look directed down at the familiar face. He coughed softly as air began to fill once-emptied lungs, but soon after, the kunoichi was relieved to see dark pools of black snap up to meet her gaze. "Good. Because I don't think I could've beat him a second time so quickly. And then where would be be?"

Wordlessly, she watched as his brows furrowed defiantly in contained rage and rebellion... before the young man's expression smoothed out into what Tenten could only assume was guilt. Guilt for not being strong enough to hold Orochimaru back after his own powers were stripped. And guilt for all the damage he no doubt caused while the experienced Sannin had been in control.

"You can stop that right there," the kunoichi was quick to retort. And it was then that she finally shifted in her seat to lean forward. Tenten had a point to make, and he was sure as hell going to get it. "What happened, happened. And whatever consequences came from it can be dealt with later. We don't have time in the plan for guilt and regret."

It was a hopeless attempt, perhaps, she knew. Sasuke was a man permanently chained to his emotions despite never really allowing them to be openly shown to the world. But it was better to lay out all their cards on the table so that he could see where the path led and where he stood on the map of their convictions. Tenten needed him to realize that his failures should only be met with determined resolve. Only then would he be able to struggle past them and meet the unattainable goals he had set for himself. For them.

Only when she saw the realization dawn on him did she help him out of his dirt prison, a much quicker process than the time it had taken to place him in it. "...What were you going to do if it wasn't me who woke up?"

Tenten gave a shrug at that and turned to start her trek down the hall without another thought. "Keep stabbing you to death until it was."

This she knows for certain. *nods* This... is very promising news for my inner-shipper. Although I still actually have to finish it first before any comments can be made about it. ^^;

Oh~ Please do to be making the list! In addition to feeling honored at having that thread among the top few (a-aww~ ♥♥♥), I would love to see what other threads make the cut. 8DDD
