"Next student."
A casual glance at the clock told her that it was nearing midday. Meaning that they were overdue for a break. The morning already felt long, and Mei was more than ready to postpone the constant march of potential Academy graduates for the sake of her own insanity. She could not speak for the others, though there was a sinking suspicion that they felt the same way.
There had been more candidates this year than anticipated, partially due to the increasing demand for shinobi in the field. The potential for war tended to render such wide-spread reaction. However, the three of them could not expect to last out much longer without a reprieve.
"And who do we have here?" Tsume inquired from the other end of the table as the next student entered.
"Uh... Maito Gai," Minato replied, lifting up the file to off the name.
At that, the young Inuzuka snorted. "Seriously?"
"That's the name on the file." And just to emphasize his point, the blond held up said folder and gestured to where the name was printed big, bold letters.
She scoffed again and simply turned to face the new candidate, giving him her full attention. The fact that she had no further comment on the matter was a clear indicator of how she felt -- of how they all felt -- after spending all morning evaluating prospective candidates. However, that problem was soon resolved when the new student burst in with so much exuberant energy, leaving all three of them to look on in mild shock, awe, and confusion.
"GREETINGS, instructors! What a GLORIOUS day for an exam!"
Her initial reaction was to quirk a curious brow at the young boy's demeanor, far too cheerful and... bouncy than any of the other students before him. And as the kunoichi regarded him carefully, she could not help but wonder if, perhaps, the boy had raided a caffeine drawer before coming to the Assessment. At a loss of what to do next or how to properly react, Mei could only turn to her companions for a bit of help before mustering out a response. "Uh... are you ready?"
"My youthful spirit is prepared for ANY challenge you have for me."
For a moment, all three of them simple exchanged questioning looks with each other before Tsume decidedly addressed the student. "...A simple yes would have been fine."
"Let's just get started," Mei interjected softly, shuffling through the papers stacked on the table, "If you could, please perform a substitution."
With a quick nod and a formal salute, the young student -- Gai as his report indicated -- held his hands together in the traditional beginning seal. And simply held it there. Filled to the brim with excitement, his enthusiasm was practically spilling over in waves of energy, radiating outward like a beacon for everyone in the room to feel. The boy held a good amount of chakra, that much was clear. But all three of the judges could only look on in confusion. He still had not moved from his spot to complete the sequence of hand signs that would complete the technique.
"What's up with this kid? He's been standing there for ten minutes."
"Tsume has a point. I think we're gonna have to fail them."
"...Wait."
Pushing back her chair, Mei ignored how the legs scrapped softly along the floor and stood from her spot. Then, without any word of warning, the young kunoichi threw a kunai at the unsuspecting student. The others jumped up from their seats in protest, But it was too late. The projectile was already sailing across the room. And before anyone of them could breathe another breath, it hit Gai squarely between the eyes, pushing him to fall back helplessly against the force.
"Have you gone mental?!"
"Just watch."
As if one cute, the vestige of the student disappeared in a puff of smoke and was replaced by an innocent chair, leaving everyone in the room to look on a mixed moment of shock, confusion, and awe until finally they all seemed to settle on a mutual pride for the young shinobi's abilities.
"He's good," was Minato's even admittance, "I didn't even see him move."
"I didn't either," Mei agreed with a smirk, sliding a glance in his direction, "But after watching you, I've learned to be suspicious of flickers and twitches."
"So... where's the kid now?"
"DYNAMIC Entry!"
Well trained as they were, the three of them moved on instinct, dodging and jumping out of the way in an instance. And with a crashing crunch of wood, the table they had been sitting at was broken into a thousand splinters. And in the middle of it all laid Maito Gai, shaking away the dust from his crop of hair. Then came the smile and the ever enthusiastic thumbs up, the image completed with an unbelievable ping of his teeth.
Glancing out at the remains of the judge's table, Mei turned to the guards standing at the door. "...I think it's time for that break now."
