Dedicated to: Minato and Mei ♥
He was like a drowned rat, drenched from head to toe and shivering in his own skin. But the only thing that caught Mei's attention was the way Minato's normally bright eyes seemed to be devoid of light. The way his head seemed to hang with an untold sadness that was all too familiar. That alone had been enough to keep her from asking. To keep him from explaining just why he had showed up unexpectedly and unannounced at her bedroom window in the middle of the night during a downpour. All that she could do was simply sit there and watch the outline of his silhouette in silent observance, the both of them stone still on opposite sides of the window like statues. Neither moving nor speaking. It was not her place. It was not her right.
"They're gone," he finally said, confirming what Mei had already suspected.
Minato's parents were dead.
It had been a mere whisper of breath, barely loud enough to hear over the pitter-patter of the rain. But it had been enough. Such news could not help but resonate forever in the soul no matter how softly they were spoken. The how and the why were not important. Only the what. And so Mei did not bother to ask. Instead, the young girl simply stepped aside and waited for Minato to climb inside before guiding them both towards the bed. And as they had done so many nights of their childhood, the two of them slid and settled under the covers in perfect silence.
The seconds ticked by light decades as she simply laid there staring at him in the dark. Watching. Waiting. Prepared. For what, Mei was not sure. But such calm -- such emptiness -- could not last for much longer. Minato's hardened resolve could not last for much longer.
And sure enough, after what seemed like an eternity, she felt him shift closer. Felt his arms quietly slip around her, seeking comfort that he no longer could find elsewhere. And as Mei did the same, as she cradled his head in the crook of her neck, the young girl could only breathe out a heavy sigh into his golden hair and give Minato all the support she could possibly give.
"...You still have us."
He was wet, and they were both shivering from the cold. From the reality of it all. There had been nowhere else for him to go. And no amount of warmth could erase the icy chill of death that touched upon both of their souls. But maybe, just maybe, her words could provide him with the sort of comfort he needed. No matter how empty they might have seemed. As long as they had been friends and as many times as he had been there for her, Mei needed him to know that she was there for Minato as well. They all were.
"...I know."
Smiling to herself, she held him closer to her warmth before responding, "I did always want a pet."
And in spite of himself or the situation that would no doubt be waiting for them when morning came, Minato laughed. It was not as cheerful or hearty as usual. But it was enough to let her know that in the end, he would be alright. They all would be.
