Dedicated to: -sniffles- Kushina and Minato ;___;

Amid the rubble and debris -- amid the aftermath of battle and sacrifice -- the Hokage Tower still stood tall and proud. Almost eternal. Ever watching over the village like a celestial guardian. And despite the half-destroyed buildings and crumbled districts that littered the streets, Konoha still looked beautiful in all of its broken glory. At least, that was what Mei hoped to think one day. When the pain of the loss did not hurt so much.

The plan had been hastily plotted out, full of holes and uncertainties. But if there was one thing they had learned from working together all those years, it was how to make the best of dire situations. To use what they had in order to achieve the desired results. Even at the expense of their own lives. Because that, above all else, was the number one duty of a shinobi. And while she was more than prepared to give up her own life in order to ensure that the village would survive an attack from the Kyuubi, it was simply not her time.

Fate, it would seem, had other plans for Mei.

Overhead, the sun beamed brightly down on the village, giving it a certain glow of hope. Of promise for the future and all those who would grow up to take up the call of the shinobi. And had it been any other day, Mei would have smiled at the thought. Would have turned from the temperal shrine of all those who had fallen during the battle to look out over the village that stretched out towards the horizon. Towards a better future. But how could she when everything felt so impossibly wrong and empty? How could she do anything else but mourn?

How could Mei do anything but miss them?

In a perfect world, she would not have been standing in front of a false and temporary shrine to their greatness. She would have been able to grow old with her friends, dearest and nearest to her heart. But they did not live in a perfect world. Only a lesser one now that Minato and Kushina were gone.
