Inhaling deeply and giving a soft sigh, she let the soothing roar of the water lull her into a state of calm reserve, slapping against the rock in a constant flow and rushing downstream with the current. High above, she felt the sun beamed down warmly through the crevice carved in the roof of the cave, mingling with the drafty breeze that swept in from the falls to create a fairly blissfully atmosphere. And around her, the smell of flowers filled the air, mixing and coiling around the distinct scent of morning dew and spring rain. She closed her eyes to all of it. Allowed for it to engulf her within its protective sphere that stood wholly separate from everything beyond the waterfall.

Surely this was heaven on earth, at its peak and free for her to enjoy. A land that existed apart from the worries of the world, independent from the rules that governed the affairs of human life. And for a brief moment in time, Mei allowed herself to forget about the impending war. About the dangers of every day life that came from the promise of fighting and conflict between the shinobi nations. It would only defeat the original purpose of sending her there in the first place, although there would be no objections to her if the choice was made to return home.

It had neither been Mei's decision nor her choice to be there when the world outside of this hidden paradise was on the verge of death and turmoil. But as the sole vessel carrying the future of theSarutobi clan, it had been an order from her father that the kunoichi could not refuse. Hiruzen had been the one to issue the order, and much to her surprise, Shirou had been the one to suggest the location. With the two most important men in her life working side-by-side towards this goal, there was no opposing argument that would win the battle for her. And so she was left with little other choice but to concede. After all, what safer haven was there than among those who were contracted to guard her with their lives?

Certainly, the dragons would protect her from harm while the child grew to full term.

The soft rustle of grass was her only warning as firm and gentle hands glided around the kunoichi and the small swell of her stomach. And with them came the smoky smell of burning wood and red-hot metal. And then a faint hint of fresh-fallen rain, mingling with the other scents that wafted around her in the air. It was a familiar smell. The scent of home and an eternal comfort that did well to pull a contented smile from Mei's soft and full lips.

"How's the baby?" he whispered softly into her ear, as if afraid to break the wonderful stillness.

"Fussy, now that you're here," was her sarcastic reply, calloused fingers taking hold of Shirou's hands and shifting them around so that he could feel the truth of her words for himself, "Guess she senses her father."

"Not even born and already she has the senses of a shinobi." And despite the quiet mutter, Mei could practically see the proud grin in his face. Just like any expecting father-to-be.

"Why not? Both her parents have served their villages faithfully. She will do the same."

"If that is her choice."

Here, the contented smile lessened just a fraction. Because of the truth of her thoughts and the weight of reality that came with her next words. "If she is anything like us, it will be."

Both fell into a long stretch of silence, neither one able to find the words to move on from that sobering thought. Both knowing the hard road that laid ahead for their child. One of deception. Of destruction. And of death. Those were the elements that bound a shinobi to the life, even as it brought them closer and closer to the brink of insanity. But even so, Mei had to remind herself that there were positive aspects as well that made it all worth the risk and sacrifice.

"Then we will make her a shinobi like no other." And with that, he tightened his grip around her, pulling the kunoichi closer into the warmth of his body.

The warm circle of Shirou's arms that would seek to protect her. The new generation of life that grew inside of her, that would seek out her guidance once the time came. Mei would find comfort in those things. And with them, she would find her purpose for continuing on.
