"Stop worrying about me."
Smirking to herself, the kunoichi stepped out from where she had stood hidden behind the brush and shadows of the forest. Kid was still smart. But then again, Mei had seen that for herself, on several occasions. After all, like most others in the village, their destinies were tied together.
"I can't help it." Arms still crossed, she slowly approached the younger shinobi and positioned herself beside him in front of the Memorial, the marker that was inscribed with every single Konoha shinobi that had died in battle trying to keep the village safe. The elder's intentions had been good when the idea was first suggested and implemented. But they did not think everything through completely. "I know you. I know you better than you think."
They did not account for those like Kakashi, who would only use the Memorial as a source of guilt to fuel their need for redemption. Every shinobi faced moments like that, with every mission they take and every assignment they are given. Survivor's guilt, they would call it. As if giving it a title would make it any easier to overcome.
"You don't know anything."
"I think I do." Lowering her head, Mei looked off to the side and idly shuffled her feet along the dirt path that lead up to the marker. Paused to toy with a pebble that rested beside her before continuing with her thought. "I've known you for a long time. Nearly all your life. I think I understand you enough to know what you're thinking... what you're feeling."
"And what's that?"
"...Guilt."
And to her utter surprise, he actually scoffed. Not the usual nonsensical sounds that usually encompassed his social vocabulary, but an actual scoff. An underplayed reaction, perhaps. But at least it was something beyond the nothingness that he had been sporting for the past few weeks. It was progress. "I don't feel guilty that he died."
"No, you don't," she agreed. And then it was his turn to be shocked, although as always, he did well to conceal it. "You feel guilty because you didn't die with him."
Mei turned to him just in time to catch the confused and skeptic stare of his natural eye, the other one covered by the cloth of his forehead protector. Obito's last and only gift to his friend. But the only reply she offered was a mere smile, giving him a moment longer to let her words sink in before walking away.
"Just don't let it consume you, alright, kid?"
"...I make no promises."
