Glancing about, they waited a moment more to make sure there was no one else around before stepping behind the waterfall. And from there, it was just a matter of waiting for Tianlong to come out and greet them. In the meantime, Mei simply stood there amid the foliage with a hand lightly pressed to her hip. What they were waiting for, she was not certain. But the kunoichi also knew better than to question any request that Shirou gave, especially when it meant taking them through the forest of the Fire Country on the very cusp of a war.
If he was willing to take such a risk, this had to have been very important.
He was a man of many faces, though, and it was a difficult thing to determine just which one Shirou was wearing, even for those closest to him. However, there was one that she knew all too well that displayed the sort of honor and nobility that the young woman suspected he wore during his days as a shinobi.
Oh if only Mei could have seen him in those days...
A gust of wind signaled the other's arrival -- the last leg of their tripod -- rustling the petals on the rainbow of flowers that carpeted the ground and along the wall. And then with a rumble of the earth, he landed.
As always, Mei tried to refrain from taking a cautionary step back in his presence. Because even after all this time, the sight of him still amazed and frightened her. After all, it was not everyday that one came face to face with a real, live dragon.
"Nice of you to finally join us, Tianlong," Shirou commented evenly. To which the dragon merely leaned down to huff a cloudy breath in his direction.
The sarcasm in Shirou's voice was unmistakable. But nothing more than a jest. All in good fun, as the saying goes, she supposed. And the resulting breath of smoke had only been a returning gesture to the playful dig. Considering just how long the two of them had known each other, it was expected. Just as dragons dictated the fate of all men,Shirou and his future was closely tied to Tianlong. It was his family legacy, after all. But Mei could only wonder why she had been asked to come as well.
With a hand lightly pressed to her hip, the kunoichi simply stood there in relative silence -- in awe and fondness at their banter -- and waited for them their usual banter greetings before moving to find out just what exactly was going on. Finally, the great dragon turned his golden eyes in her direction.
"Are you certain this is the one?" came the low rumble of his voice, shaking the very rock and earth they stood on. To which Shirou only gave a stiff nod in response.
"Absolutely," he added in affirmation, "I've given this a lot of thought, and... there is no other for me."
"...Certain about what?" the young woman inquired, curiously. But to no avail.
"Very well," Tianlong responded, keeping his attention on Shirou and him alone, "Then we shall begin."
"Begin? Wh-what...?" But before she could ask the noble beast about what they were talking about, he was in the air and disappearing out of the cave with a clean spray of water as he passed through the cascading water of the falls. Left with little other choice, Mei turned to the only other who could answer her questions. So it was with a mixture of annoyance and confusion that she addressed the young man. "Shirou, what's going on here?"
He seemed nervous, almost hesitant as she watched him glance around cautiously before approaching and taking her to the side. And when he spoke, it was in a low whisper, as if to hide some secret from the all knowing dragon of the heavens. "I've... asked Tianlong to extend a contract with the dragons... to you."
"To... me?" Disbelief was probably the best word to describe just how Mei felt after hearing that. From what she had understood with her father's contract with Enma, they were not given lightly. For him to actively argue her right to receive one "But Shirou... they're your family summons. I could never..."
"It's ok... I want you to," he assured her, "There's a war coming and... with Enma going to Katsuro, I would feel a lot better about you fighting in it if I knew they were out there with you."
And as she felt the weight of his hand on her shoulder, felt the gentle squeeze of his thick fingers around the curve, Mei felt a sudden surge of confidence. One to match the resolution he had for her.
"Besides," Shirou added with a fond smile, "I know you'll take care of them."
And perhaps one day, she would be able to make the summons a family affair once more.
