Poised and silent, Shirou held out his hand to her and waited patiently to see what she would do. Will you come with me? it seemed to say. Will you trust me again? And in spite of herself and all that had been milling about in her mind for the past few weeks -- months even -- Mei had taken it with a firm grip. And together, they stepped behind the roaring water of the falls to the world that laid hidden beyond.

There had been no explanation. No word of discussion about what this endeavor would entail. Just a note that he had left on her window the night before telling her to pack a bag for a journey and to meet him at the gates of the village first thing in the morning. Before dawn when decent citizens still slept in relative peace. And like the kunoichi that she was, Mei did not bother asking why or where they would be going when she had arrived that morning. Only did as he had asked and prepared for the trip as she would have during any other occasion. She was a shinobi after all, and it was no different than the number of unexpected missions she had been assigned through the years. At the very least,Shirou had the decency to notify her some time beforehand and not at some ungodly hour like the ANBU agents tended to do.

Still, she could not help but wonder what this was all about.

A spray of water misted her hair and skin with tiny droplets as she entered silently, letting the gentle pull of his hand be her guide through the shifting darkness of the cave that laid hidden behind the falls. With all that still remained so secret inShirou's life before his arrival to Konoha, Mei was not sure what to expect. But as her eyes began to adjust to the diming light, it soon became clear that there was so much more to Shirou than she had ever imagined.

The sweet smell had been the first to greet her senses, a collection of wonderful scents wafting out with the cool draft that flowed in and out of the cave, the fast rush of the water creating a soft breeze where the wind otherwise would not have been able to reach. And then came the slowly etching details of all the beautiful secrets that laid hidden within. The carpet of flowers that spread out under their feet and along the walls, covering the rock in a rainbow of colors. The long chords of vines that spiraled down from the ceiling in elegant strings. The way everything seemed to sparkle and shine with the light refracting against the crystal clear water of the falls that fell in sheets over the lip of the rocks to cover the mouth of the cave.

A hidden utopia.

Truly this was an untold paradise hidden from the world and created for only those brave enough to risk all in order to stand a witness to it, stealing her breath and leaving Mei in awe. "This...this is amazing..."

"Wait here," Shirou said softly, "There's more."

"More? What else could there be?"

But instead of answer, the young man merely disappeared into the shadows beyond. And for a second, the kunoichi wondered just how long he would be gone. But all thoughts on that soon dissipated with a low rumble that seemed to come from the bowels of earth itself and shaking the very foundation she stood upon. Nearly loosing her footing, she flailed out her arms to keep balanced and slowly made her way to the side to use the rock wall as an anchor until everything was still once more.

"Sh-Shirou?" she called, softly at first, but with a little more confidence as the silence stretched on, "Shirou, are you there?"

"So, this is the one you spoke of, Little Shirou?" a low voice echoed, "She seems a bit skittish."

"Well, you are very intimidating," came Shirou's familiar tone.

"Nonsense. She has yet to even meet me."

"Then I suggest you remedy that and soon before she runs off."

"Shirou?" Mei called out to the darkness, "What's going on, who are you talking to?"

And again, the earth shook, in little bursts of movement that felt and sounded like the steady beat of heavy footsteps. But what sort of manner of man or creature could possibly... And as the figure of Shirou appared out of the gloom, so to was he followed by another, the sight of which could only be described by something in her wildest dreams.

"He is talking to me, little one."

Her eyes had been the first to take the visual trip, gazing past taloned toes and scaly legs to a torso protected under plates of hard skin. And as she scanned over the long neck, Mei had to lift up her head so that she could see the rest of the beast. In spite of herself, all she could concentrate on were the rows of razor-sharp teeth that peeked out from his mouth, and the faint wisps of smoke weaving and wavering from the small bumps of his nostrils.

"Mei, this is Tianlong," Shirou chimed in, "Tianlong, this is Sarutobi Mei."

"T...Tianlong..."

"A pleasure to finally meet you," he grumbled deeply, lowering his head in a noble bow of respect.

"H-he's..."

"A summons," the young man responded, finishing the sentence for her. And for a brief moment, a look of hesitation flashed across his face before he continued a bit more quietly, "My...my family's summons."

"You're...family h-has a contract with...with..."

"I believe the term is dragons, my dear," Tianlong finished courteously, and sounding just a little bit too amused.

She would liked to have said that she had handled the encounter like a true kunoichi. That as the eldest child and only daughter of theSandaime , Mei had represented her family well. But it was not every day that one came across a real live dragon, especially when stories of them were only viewed at as myths and legends. A dragon of all things. A dragon!

And as the world faded to temporal black, there had only been one thought on Mei's mind: Shirou was definitely a man full of surprises.
