Dedicated to: Naruto. Auntie Mei apologizes ;__;

"Dear Hime-chan..."

And from the very first word, Mei could feel the strings of memory unfurling bit by bit. Memories she had tried to forget because of how painful they were to remember. Then again, Kushina always had a way of taking her to places she would normally never go. She should have known that it would be true of the kunoichi in death just as it had been in life. But this had been an unexpected surprise all the same.

While going through the wooden box from Uzu, she had found the letter among those Kushina had written to Naruto, shoved somewhere at the very heart of the pile. And as she scanned over the first line again, studying the feminine script of her old friend, Mei could not help but wonder when exactly Kushina have the time to write it. Especially when she barely had enough time to complete her letters to Naruto.

"If you're reading this, then it means that everything went according to plan, even despite your efforts to change my mind. Good. You should know better than to try. Heh, hope that bastard Nine-Tailed Fox enjoyed the present I left him..."

To that, Mei could only give a light chuckle. True to form, as always. That was the Kushina she knew and loved. And even though there was still some bitterness and remorse for the loss, it was good to have a little bit of it back again, even for only a brief moment.

"I know this wasn't what we had planned, but this is how it had to go. Nato-kun needed all the time he could get to perform that jutsu, and I'll be damned if you take the risk of leaving Ten-chan motherless. Besides, no one's better at creating a distraction than me, right~?..."

"Heh, yeah...right..."

"Take care of Naruto for me. I'm counting on you, Hime-chan..."

Here, she could no longer contain her emotions, and a single tear managed to make its way down the curve of her cheek, leaving behind a wet streak in its wake. As promised before they had set out for the final battle, the young Sarutobi had kept the letters Kushina had written for her son. But as it would seem, that had been the only promise Mei had been able to keep. By the time she was able to reach Naruto, he had already developed a bitterness towards the villagers for the way they treated him. Like a monster instead of the hero he truly was, forgetting the great sacrifice that his parents both had made to ensure that Konoha would continue on to be one of the greatest nations in the world. I'm sorry, Kushina...I couldn't keep my word...
