"I can't believe it's been almost a year already."

Breathing in a solemn breath and letting out a quiet sigh, Mei knelt down beside the shore's edge. And after a moment of thought, she set the boat into the water, giving it a little push out towards the open sea. The candle that it carried flickered and wavered with each rise and dip of the waves. An instant later, it was joined by another. And together they drifted off in the distance, guiding the souls of their lost friends back to the final resting place of their remains, the hope that perhaps...they would come back just this once to say a proper goodbye.

A heavy hand slowly slipped over the curve of her shoulder, the weight of his presence bringing forth a level of support and comfort like it always had in the past, even despite Mei solemn mood. "I miss them too."

Even after a year, it was still a hard thing for her to believe that both Minato and Kushina were gone. For the better part of a decade or more they had encompassed her entire life with their essence. Their never-ending spirit. They had been her friends. Her family. And she had merely stood by as they sacrificed themselves for the village.

"...Are you still blaming yourself?" Shirou inquired in a light breath, "Even after all this time?"

There was a pause, a moment of doubt and hesitation as if she were afraid to answer him. But Mei knew as much as Shirou did that deep down inside he already knew the answer. It was just a matter of confirming the truth and making it all the more real for the both of them.

"...They were my friends, Shirou," she finally mumbled softly.

"And they were mine too," he shot back in return.

At that moment, the kucnoichi turned to face her husband, honey-brown eyes filled with an untold emotion that even she could not describe. But it had only managed to last for a second, maybe less, before it dissipated and Mei was forced to turn away in sorrow. "You don't understand...I made a promise to myself."

"A...promise?"

"The day I met her...I made a promise to myself that I'd never let anything happen..."

And then...there was that comforting hand once more, drawing Mei into the warmth of his arms, the faint whispers of his breath caressing the slope of her neck while he spoke softly into her ear. A lovers quite declaration. ...A sinner's secret confession. "...So did I..."
