Shoes squeaking loudly in the quiet hallway, Tenten carefully made her way up the stairs and towards her shared dorm room. She had been enjoying herself at the cafe just down the street and around the corner from the school with Shino when the surprise shower had started. Reminded of her younger and carefree days, the sophomore had stopped to play in the rain, even managing to convince the usually practical Aburame to join her in splashing around the empty streets before they headed back to the school. The indulgence only lasted a few minutes as the storm slowly trickled to a stop by the time they reached the campus gates. But it was still nice to see her companion drop the serious facade that usually occupied his face. "A little fun goes a long way."
Trying her best to quiet the slosh and squeal of her shoes, she paused in front of her dorm room, seeing the flyer tapped onto the wooden door. The bold, white lettering stood out against the red and black swirls covering the page, eerie font announcing its message. She smiled at the reminder, snatching it off the door as she pulled out her key. There was to be a Halloween dance held in the school gymnasium on the 31st of October in celebration of the western holiday. The idea seemed entertaining enough and she knew the prospects of getting to dress up in costume would be enough to prompt several of the students into attending the event, her being one of them.
Turning the knob, the brunette instantly spotted her pink-haired roommate upon entering, sitting at her desk, no doubt studying for a class. "Hey Sakura, how's it going? Not studying too hard I hope."
Half-asleep Sakura jumped slightly from the sudden presence behind her, turning around she realized it was Tenten, then again, who else had the keys to their dorm room? "Oh! Tenten! I didn't even notice you came in." Sighing, she closed the thick textbook lying on the desk before her, thankful to look away from the black and white blur that began to make her eyes cross from over consumption. "I should take a break though, what time is it anyway?" Glancing at the clock she blinked, unable to focus from her state of half-drowsiness. The pink-haired girl had stayed up practically all night, falling asleep with her elbow resting on her anatomy book, the palm of her hand supporting the weight of her head.
Eyes widened at the sight before her, the hour hand well past the noon mark. Nearly falling out of her chair, she ran about in a panic, flinging clothes everywhere. "It's already past noon?" she screeched, hair disheveled halfway into her shirt, getting slightly stuck in the process of putting it on. Perhaps trying to do three days worth of homework in one night wasn't the best idea after all. Darn you, overachieving genes!
"Tch, I'm surprised you even noticed anything from the way you were sleeping there." Seeing the jerkiness of her movements and the tell-tale sign of the red impression on the freshman girl's face, it was obvious to Tenten that Sakura had been sleeping for a good while. From what she remembered that morning upon waking up, the pink-haired girl had been sitting in the same position and looked half-dead. Now, probably after missing a few hours of class, Sakura looked exhausted. "What did I tell you about studying all night? It can't be good for your body. As a future medical personnel you should know that."
Dedicated to her work and intent on succeeding in the school, the freshman girl had a tendency to be a little too adamant about maintaining her grades. From what Tenten could tell, she was a smart person and an equally good student. She did not need as much time as would set aside to concentrate on her coursework. And if things went on as they were, the sophomore predicted a not so graceful mental breakdown for her pink-haired roommate.
"Any ways, look what I found." Stepping up next to her desk, Tenten placed the flyer on the closed textbook in front of her roommate. "Looks like the administrators here are trying really hard to promote this thing. This has gotta be the third reminder they've attached to the door."
Gently taking the piece of paper away from her roommate, Sakura wiped away the blurriness that still remained in her eyes, finally allowing the text to focus. "Oh, the Halloween Dance? I heard it was a big event at this school. Do you plan on going?" The pink-haired girl glanced upward, turning around completely on the wooden chair, resting her chin atop of the seat's back. "It sounds pretty fun, even if I were going though, I have no idea what I'd wear to it."
Frowning, Sakura gripped onto the flyer lightly her eyes resting on the word 'dance' but not really focused on it. I just really have no reason to go if everyone else has someone 'special' to go with, she thought to herself, the disappointment in her features obvious. Ever since the whole 'Hiruko incident,' she and Sasori hadn't spoken much. It really concerned the girl, afraid that she was losing a close friend that she had hoped she shared something special with. Something to the point of even...'liking' him as much as she had thought she liked Sasuke in middle school. To suddenly lose such a connection would tear at Sakura's heart as much as it had when Sasuke told her for the one-hundredth and final time that he had no feelings for her. Shaking her head, not wanting to remember that depressing stage that Naruto had helped her slowly climb out of, she realized her roommate was still standing before her. She really had to stop spacing out like that.
"I heard last year's dance was pretty great. I didn't actually go though so I'm not exactly sure." Grabbing a towel from the bathroom, she plopped down on her neatly-made bed and proceeded to dry off what remained of the short rain-shower. Scattered storms were expected to continue on throughout the day with momentary rays of sunshine in between; the typical unexpected weather that was common in this region of Japan. Glancing over at her roommate and seeing the somberness in the younger girl's expression, Tenten could only guess what was on Sakura's mind. There were many roles and expectations that came with a school dance, one of them being the person you decide to go with. Remembering the talk that the two had a few weeks ago concerning a certain red-haired Junior and seeing the mood that the pink-haired girl was in now, it was clear how things were progressing on that front. No luck with Sasori so far I'm guessing.
"But I think you should go, Sakura. Like you said, it sounds like a lot of fun and I know how much you like to dance." There was nothing Tenten could do about the current status of Sakura's relationship with Sasori (both romantically or otherwise) but the brunette felt she could at least try and make the freshmen feel better about attending the school function. With all the work Sakura had been putting into her schoolwork, the girl could use a night of fun to relax from all the stress she seemed to be creating for herself. Done with the towel, she hung the cloth around her neck and directed a wink towards her roommate coupled with a cheerful smile. "I'll save you a few spots on my dance card."
"As for costumes, I think the real fun is going into the shop and seeing all the options you have to choose from. You never really realize all of the possibilities until they're practically staring you right in the face. I could...help you with that if you wanted. You know, a nice girl's day out?" Hands pressed against the surface of the comforter, Tenten leaned back and effectively crossed her legs as she watched Sakura for a reaction. The offer had been made, so all that was left was to wait and see if it would be taken. There was no pressure for the freshman to accept or decline, the older girl would be fine with whatever final decision her roommate settled on and the sophomore made sure to convey that notion through her unspoken body language.
The girl sat at her desk considering Tenten's proposal for a moment. "A girl's day out, huh?" Sakura smiled, nodding. It was probably something she needed. A way to keep all her problems, both math and boy-related, out of her mind. "I think I'll take you up on your offer. But, is there even a costume shop in this area?"
Tenten smiled in return, glad that Sakura had agreed to going on the trip. Nodding, the smile lessened a bit at the younger girl's question. The area was quaint and well equipped enough to keep the students entertained on a normal basis. But there was no real need for a costume shop except for special occasions, and so most of the stores close to the school would not house such things. "Not in this area, no."
But there were places in the neighboring towns, shopping and entertainment districts that were better suited for young consumers their age. Getting up to hang the towel back onto the rack to dry, she presented her roommate with another option. "There are a couple of places not too far from here, though. We could probably walk there, but it's quicker to take the subway."
"It's too late to go during lunch since we only have about fifteen minutes left, but we could try going this afternoon after classes end. I don't have any club meetings today." Glancing down at her watch to confirm the time, Tenten leaned against Sakura's desk to wait for her answer. "We don't necessarily have to go today either, actually. We can go any time you want before the dance. It's really up to you."
Sakura thought for a moment, thinking if she had any clubs to attend after school herself. Yearbook Club would not meet for another few days, so it would probably be best for her to go later this afternoon as well. "Well, if you don't mind, could we go today? I don't have to meet for the Yearbook Club until the end of the week. And, oh!" Quickly opening up the top drawer to her desk, but struggling in the process, she grunted. I hate it whenever this happens, she muttered to herself, finding that a pen was blocking the path for the drawer to open smoothly. "Ah, here we go." Lifting up a small coin pouch she fingered through the contents, nodding. "Well, it looks like I have enough to get something, but not necessarily something too fancy."
"Today sounds perfectly fine with me." With a smile, Tenten pushed off the younger girl's desk and strolled over to set her backpack on her bed as she began searching around for the necessary school supplies she would need for her afternoon classes. With their plans settled, all that was left to do was to gather her things for World History and wait until the end of Study Hall when they would be free to take their little trip into town. "The sooner we go the better, more time to look and choose the right costume that way."
"I'm not sure when the stores close, but we should have at least two hours after we subtract the time it would take to get there." The walk to the station would be short enough, but the route they needed to take had lots of stops along the way, stalling their arrival into the district for a few minutes more than if the tram simply headed straight to their destination. But a few minutes was no real concern compared to the two hours they would have in the store itself. After all, it would be another week before the day of the dance. They had plenty of time and opportunities if nothing came from this trip. "I hope that'll be enough, but if not then we could always come back later. Do you at least have something in mind?"
Sakura pondered for a moment about just what she wanted to wear for the party, but could only draw a huge blank. "I don't really know what I should get. Perhaps when we look around a bit something will pop up in my mind, and hopefully price range." Jingling her wallet just for emphasis, she continued, "Hey, Tenten. What do you think you'll be doing for the rest of your classes today? I'm just having review for the rest of mine, so it's nothing important." The pink-haired girl bit her lip, slightly nervous for even thinking of doing this, followed by a mischievous smile creeping onto her face, her inner Sakura emerging. "How about we just go now? I'm tired of staring at books and just want out!"
Since the start of the school year, Tenten had grown to know Sakura as a all around good student. She was normally punctual, always got good grades in her courses, studied over-extensively (which contributed to her good grades) and most of all, Sakura was not the type to break the rules. So when the younger girl proposed that they skip the rest of their classes to enjoy a day out in a nearby district, the brunette could not help but be a little shocked. "Getting a little rebellious, are we?"
But at the same time, she could understand the need to escape from the stuffy classrooms, especially when taking into consideration that the pink-haired girl had already spent a great many hours that day cooped up in their shared dorm, staring at the black lettering of the text until she nodded off. A nice reprieve from that was something they all needed.
"I didn‘t know you had it in you, Sakura." With a soft chuckle, Tenten shook her head at the notion, tossing her books haphazardly onto her bed. If there was anything that could convince her to forego all responsibility, it was the prospect of having a great adventure. And indeed, this trip to the costume store would be a fine adventure for the both of them. "Sure, we can go now. I don’t think we’re doing anything extremely important in my other classes."
"Come on, let's go," the brunette called as she started walking towards the door, "With the entire after noon at our disposal, I‘m sure we’ll be able to find something for you to wear."
