Dedicated to: Lol, Kit. Because Kushina will enjoy teasing Mei about this.

And as her voice trailed off with the last words scribbled at the end of the scroll, she could already hear the soft and even breath of the other, quieted and rhythmic in sleep. As expected. After all, Kushina was still healing from her injuries. And as strong-willed or determined as the kunoichi was, the best course for a speedy recovery was to get plenty of rest. Much to her protest. Still, Mei understood the other's need to fight off the drowsy effects of the drugs pumping through her veins. Today was the first day that she would be allowed visitors, after all. And considering her importance to the fallen village of Uzu, there would be a great number of people who wished to pay their respects to the fiery princess.

But none had showed up as of yet save for one curious and concerned blond named Minato -- Kushina's savior if the stories were true -- and herself.

Then again, she thought, everyone would most likely be preoccupied to stop by today. Too busy settling into their new surroundings or moving on to the next. With the Village of Whirlpool abandoned and unsalvageable, there was a world of possibilities ahead of them. But still a choice they would have to make out of necessity instead of want. Because there would -- could -- be no turning back.

After one last check of Kushina's vitals, marking them down for the nurses and doctors to read over when the came around, Mei gathered up her things and left with a small wave to the sleeping girl. No sooner had she taken three steps out of the room, a young man rounded the corner at the end of the hall and came into view. And almost instantly, their eyes seemed to lock together. There was nothing particularly stunning or notable about him, though it was clear that he was not a native of the village. One of the Uzu refugees, perhaps. Yet Mei could not manage to take her eyes away from his, nor did he make any attempts to turn his gaze aside. It was as if a spell drew one to the other in an unbreakable bond. A connection that seemed to last for an unimaginable stretch of time.

When they were close enough, Mei gave him a courteous smile and a nod of acknowledgment. A wordless greeting that needed no exchange of words. And when he smiled back, when she caught sight of the small indentions of his dimples, the kunoichi felt something flutter in the pit of her stomach. It was only for a split second, but it was enough to leave lingering questions of confusion to ponder about later.

Then just as quickly, the moment passed and he was walking further down the hall. But in spite of herself and due to a curious part of her psyche, Mei could not help but glance fleetingly back as she turned the corner... only to find him doing the same while he stood at the door to Kushina's room.

So, he's a friend of Kushina's, the young woman thought as she signed out from her volunteer duty at the hospital, Maybe I'll see him the next time I visit her.
