Even in the darkness of the corridor, she had still been able to see his pale form dart out of the room and slink his way down another hallway. And there was nothing more Mei wanted to do than to go after him with the rest of her unit, to finally catch the shinobi that had effortlessly fooled them all for months now. Maybe even years. But the fleeting sight of her father standing idly at the door that Orochimaru had just exited had stifled any dire need to catch the elusive Snake Lord.
"Follow him!" she called to the others, "Remember, he's a Sannin, so be careful and watch each other's backs!"
And with a nod of acknowledgment, the next in line through the chain of commands took over without pause, leaving Mei behind to deal with her father and the aftermath of what he had done.
"...Dad..." she began, her voice was just a mere whisper, a faint breath of air while she spoke. But it stopped there as Mei struggled with what, exactly to say. What could she say? One of her father's dearest students had betrayed the village they all had sworn and risked their lives to protect.
But, as fate would have it, she did not have to say anything. "Mei...don't..."
Never one to argue with her father, especially when he seemed as dejected and disappointed as he did at that moment, the kunoichi simply continued further through the catacombs, stepping past the elder man without another word. Here was where the Snake Lord had spent the better part of the last year. In hiding. Experimenting. Playing god with nature. And as Mei slowly scanned the room -- desperately tried to ignore the stench of decay -- it was easy to tell that these were the results. Nothing but failures. Nothing but death.
"Whoever you thought he was...he died a long time ago," Mei said softly, breaking the silence that stood between them, "Orochimaru is nothing more than a monster and a coward who refused to accept the laws of nature and this village."
"No...he was my student...still is..." her father muttered in response, his face solemn and unreadable, although the old man's tone of voice was unmistakable, "And I am the coward for not doing what I had to...what I must to ensure he wouldn't do something like this again."
"But dad - "
"- That's enough, Mei..."
"...Yes...Lord Hokage..."
