Sakura walked back to her room, books balancing between her arms and abdomen, "Geez...how many of these things do we need? And why do they have to be so heavy!" Finally reaching her dorm room, Sakura sighed in relief, "Finally..." Placing her body against the wooden surface, pressing her weight against the books to prop them up, Sakura dug in her pocket for her key. She lifted the key, raising it victoriously, "There you are, bugger!" Sticking the piece of metal into the knob, she gave it a twist causing the door to lurch forward. However, much to her surprise, the door opened too suddenly with her weight forced against it, sending Sakura shooting from the hallway onto the floor. "Ouch!" She glanced up from the floor and waved, embarrassed at her roommate. "Uhm...hi."
She had heard the melodic jingle of keys as they slipped easily into the lock as well as the muffled grumbles of a familiar voice through the wooden door. And so Tenten had been expecting her roommate's entrance...just not so rushed or uncoordinated as it had been. Before she had any time to react at all to the quick turn of the key and knob, the sophomore girl found herself looking down at the pink-haired freshman amid a pile of rather heavy looking books. Her initial reaction had been to quirk a questioning brow, but quickly brushed past the gesture.
"...Hi," was her simple return greeting. She found that there really wasn't much else to say about the situation. Tenten herself had made that same mistake once before, having a more chaotic result as she had been carrying sheet music and paint supplies at the time. For a few precious hours until she managed to scrub up all the spilled art products, her floor had been the most colorful in the entire student dorm. So with a fond smirk at the memory while smoothly crossing her arms over her chest, Tenten inquired, "Need a hand, Sakura?"
"Eh...I'm fine." Sitting up on her knees, she reached down to the scattered textbooks that decorated their dorm room floor, stacking the thick pieces of text on top of one another. Lifting the stack, Sakura made her way to her dresser, and pulled open a drawer to stick the reading material in its place. Rubbing her forearms, trying to get the blood to flow through them after her fall, she walked back over to her roommate. She had yet to talk to the girl, and really wanted to get to know the person she'd be rooming with for the rest of the year, if not for the rest of her time at Konoha High.
"So...uhm...Tenten, right?" She pointed, hoping she remembered her roommate's name.
"Heh, glad to know you remember me," the older girl teased, knowing perfectly well that names would be nothing more than a jumble of syllables and letters for the next few days, if not weeks.
While it was true that the two of them had only met yesterday afternoon when Tenten had finally arrived after her long flight from China, she had hoped this freshman would at least recall the repetitious structure that made up her name. But such things weren't a major concern. Sakura had remembered, although a bit hesitant in confirming that fact.
"So what's with all the books?" the brunette inquired, casually going back to what she had been doing before the abrupt entrance, "Did you rob a library on the way back from class or something?"
"No, those just happen to be my textbooks this year." Sakura sighed, moving to her bed to plop down on the pale, pink covers. "I don't see why we need all that. It's not like we read all of it anyway." Sure Sakura was a book worm, but not that dedicated to reading.
The pink-haired girl flipped onto her stomach, her elbows propping her up from the mattress as she rested her chin on her palms. Sakura sighed, slightly dazed from her long day at school. She had met so many new people that day it was overwhelming, and... A blush came across her face that was completely unexpected. Covering her cheeks to hide her state from Tenten, Sakura's eyes widened. No! Bad, Sakura! Bad! The girl grit her teeth in frustration, trying with all her might to bring her color back to its normal, pale hue. What's wrong with me today? Something had been bothering her, that was for sure, but she had no idea where the blush came from or what caused it.
Trying to bring attention away from her face, Sakura asked, "So, have you joined any clubs yet? I joined the Yearbook, Judo, and Drama clubs."
Tch, she obviously hasn't taken a good look at the curriculum yet, Tenten thought to herself, casting a casual glance at the drawer that contained that monstrous pile of reading material, These are standard textbooks.
"Um...I'm in Archery, Kendo, Photography, Art, aaaaand...Volleyball," she replied, listing off the extensive amount of after school activities that she had decided to join this year, "In fact, I was looking through my art supplies and checking my volleyball equipment when you came in."
Grabbing the set of knee-pads that had been sitting on her nightstand, the brunette sat down on the mattress and casually swept the unnoticed sketchbook into the dark recesses under her bed with the heel of her foot. No one had ever seen what laid inside of those pages and Tenten was definitely not going to start show and tell now.
"Hm, maybe the photography club could take some pictures for the yearbook," she suggested, leaning back on one of her hands in thought, "We already have the equipment so it would certainly make sense and save a lot of time, money, as well as human resources."
Ino threw her books into her dorm room, hoping they'd land with some semblance of organization and not fall out of her bag everywhere, shut the door, and headed across the hall to Sakura's room. She simply needed to talk, something she hadn't been able to do all day; teachers in high school were even stricter about catching notes and whispers. She swore her Biology teacher had eyes in the back of her head when she had a piece of chalk thrown at her for doodling instead of taking notes. She knocked against the door a few times and waited for the door to open. She really hoped Sakura's roommate wasn't one of those prissy types that always wanted to study.
Tenten received no reply to the suggestion she had just made as a knock interrupted any and all things her roommate would have said. Quietly, she debated between answering it herself or letting Sakura do so. She knew of no one who would have the time to stop in for a chat -- everyone she had spoken to already had other plans after school -- and assumed it would be for the pink-haired Freshman anyways. But Sakura didn't seem to want to move from her position on the bed and Tenten wasn't in the mood to sit still for long. A bright afternoon was shining in from the window that simply would not let her laze about the evening hours until dinner. Doing homework on such a nice day didn't seem like a good option either. I wonder who's at the door. Perhaps they would have an idea about what to do to pass the time until the evening meal would be held.
Quickly padding across the room, Tenten opened the door to find herself face to face with the blonde girl she had seen Sakura talking with that morning; the same one all the guys seemed to be following her first day back from the summer break. I think Ino was her name.
"...Hello. Can I help you?"
Ino shifted her weight from side to side, waiting for the door she was standing in front of to open. When it did, it wasn't Sakura, like she had expected, but another girl, obviously her roommate. She looked familiar, as if Ino had seen her at some point in time that day, but with all the new faces and names that had whirled around during her eight different periods, Ino just couldn't place the brunette's face.
"Yeah. I'm Yamanaka Ino, nice to meet you. I'm Sakura's friend; you don't mind if I come in and hang out here for a while, do you? A single dorm gets really lonely, especially on the first day of school, when we should be talking about everything and anything." As she spoke, she peered around the girl in the doorway until she saw Sakura, flopped on her dorm bed. She gave her friend a short wave.
"Oh! Now I remember you; you're the girl who came in to talk to the boy with the funny hat in our history class this morning!" The first few minutes of that class had been a jumbled-up mess, since she had still be scrambling to get everything under control, but she had remembered the brunette from when she had come into their classroom to talk to the only other person who had been there besides herself and Sakura- some boy with a funny hat that had looked like cat ears.
She tilted her head to the side in thought as the name struck a cord in her memory; trying hard to place where she had heard it before. Yamanaka Ino? Now why does that sound - Oh! Shikamaru and Chouji's friend. The sophomore girl had briefly overheard the two boys talking of her, an old friend like Chouji was to the lazy Nara. Any further detail concerning her had been lost to the winds though as Tenten focused her attention on what she had been doing: sketching a photo.
"Oh, sure, come in," she said in reply to the younger girl's first question, opening the door wider in invitation, "Sakura's right there."
Looking a little like she's daydreaming, Tenten mentally added as she glanced over at her roommate's bed, I wonder about what.
"Um...yeah I was talking to Kankuro this morning," she responded, confirming the blonde's revelation, "There was time before classes started and I hadn't really seen anyone I knew yet so I thought I'd say a quick hello to him."
Sakura just continued staring at the ceiling, flip flopping images in her mind, but her senses kept wandering back to someone she least expected. A boy with reddish hair and deep farseeing eyes. Resting the back of her left hand against her forehead, she hadn't realized the commotion that was happening in her room. Shaking the thought out of her head, wondering if she was going insane, Sakura sat up on the pink bed, holding herself up with her arms as she turned to see who was in the room talking to Tenten. "Ino? When did you get here?" I must've really been out of it...
Ino bit back a laugh at how much Sakura had to have been daydreaming to have missed the both the knock and the conversation. She decided to take advantage of her friend's daze a little. "Oh, about half an hour; don't worry, your roommate's been good company." She gave Tenten a wink, both communicating to the other girl to continue the joke as well as to possibly confuse Sakura even further.
"Whoever this new boy is, he really must be something for you to be so out of it." This time, she couldn't quite prevent the giggle from forcing itself past her lips and into the open. She flounced over to Sakura's bed and dropped onto it, dangerously close to the pink-haired girl's feet, then turned to look at Tenten again.
"So, are you a freshmen, or do you just have friends in the freshmen class? Oh, I never caught your name; sorry!"
"B-boy? Wh-who said it was a boy!" Her attention being snagged by Ino's little comment caused her to jump up from her relaxed position, a huge blush decorating her pale face. Trying in vain to cover up her obvious embarrassed state, Sakura whined, knowing she sucked at lying. But why did I think of him?
Turning to Tenten, she stared at the dark-haired girl, pleading her to change the subject with her sea-foam green orbs. Or I will never hear the end from Ino!
The older girl had to suppress a snicker at Ino's comment about her roommate daydreaming about a guy. The obvious blush on the younger girl's face didn't seem to help much either. Having caught a glimpse of the pink-haired freshman during their lunch period Tenten could make a good guess of who the culprit was, if that were the case. She refrained from saying anything though, not really the type to poke fun, especially when Sakura looked so desperate at that moment. The pleading look from the freshman registered loud and clear, playing on the sympathies of the sophomore.
I'll have mercy on her Tenten thought with a smirk, ...And her little dream boy.
"Um...I'm Tenten, Sakura's roommate obviously," the brunette introduced herself to the blonde, "And...no I'm not a freshman, but I seem to be getting to know a lot of them through Sakura...and Shikamaru too actually."
"Oh, so you met the lazy bum? And he actually did something other than complain? Surprising..." Though I guess having Chouji here as well will be good for him socially.... Ino reclined on Sakura's bed, bracing her arms so that she was propped up. "Nice to meet you, Tenten."
Sakura's blush and stutter hadn't escaped the blonde, who had only made the comment about a guy in passing fun. However, the embarrassed reaction and oh-so-obvious blush simply confirmed that there was, in fact, a guy on Sakura's mind. I wonder who it is; I'll have to watch her to try and figure out who, since by her reaction, there's no chance of her telling me.
She poked at one of Sakura's feet absently and blinked at the other two girls. "So, what were you two doing before I came in?"
"Just talking...somewhat. I guess I kinda just zoned out from there...long day and all." Flashes of specific events of Sakura's day flowed through her mind, a few causing her to groan to herself, others causing her face to blush once again. "I believe we were talking about how ridiculous the book load is for this year..." She put a contemplating finger on her lip as she stared at the ceiling, as if searching for answers that couldn't be seen by the naked eye. "So, how was your first day of school, Ino? Tenten?"
"What's there to tell, it was the first day," Tenten scoffed, folding her arms over her stomach as she stood there in the middle of the room, "Nothing but boring introductions and course overviews, things that my teachers already sent to me over the summer."
She recalled a similar conversation she had had with Shikamaru earlier that day during lunch. One of the advantages of being in a higher grade level than the Freshmen was receiving information prior to the start of the year. It was a way to keep the libraries and book stores from having an overflow of students, she supposed; stopping the chaotic jumble of bodies as they fought for the same class material before it had a chance to start.
Perks, I guess, the older girl thought with a shrug.
"Aside from that nice little wake up call from your friend, Sakura, the day's pretty much been a quiet one," she finished, walking over to the window to look outside at the beautiful evening once again, "I don't know about you two but I'm ready for some outdoor activities; it's just too nice for anyone to stay inside."
"Yeah, but actually tonight I'll be making dinner for--" Sakura cut herself off, knowing that if she said anymore Ino would probably interrogate the hell out of her, as well as Sasori for that matter. Something that the redhead would most likely not want to be involved in. He was anti-social enough already, but to send Ino after him? She shuddered at the thought.
"So yeah, uhm...I was thinking of joining a sport club of some sort. Maybe volleyball or judo. Although, I heard that Gai-sensei would be sponsoring all the martial arts clubs." An image of super, fuzzy eyebrows appeared in her mind, causing her to nearly faint from the, 'youth-fullness?' Another shiver ran down her spine. Too many scary images for the day, thank you very much.
"First day was okay; I mean, aside from Naruto's idiocy, it was pretty normal as far as first days go. I got a piece of chalk thrown at me during Bio though- I swear, that teacher has eyes in the back of her head! There's no other way she could've known I was doodling instead of taking notes." Just thinking about some of her classes made Ino grimace, but then her ears caught up with her brain and she realized something Sakura had just said.
"Wait. Sakura. You said you were cooking dinner for someone tonight? Could this be your mystery boy? Ooh, I was hungry from skipping lunch, but the prospect of finding out who your new guy is almost makes me want to skip dinner too. Which reminds me; Tenten, what's the food generally like here? Standard caf fare, or is it actually worth eating?"
Ino stood up from the bed and bounced lightly on the balls of her feet. "I agree with Tenten, let's get moving a little; PE kinda wore me out, but I wouldn't mind getting outside for a bit."
"You'll get used to Gai-sensei's methods eventually, I'm sure," the older girl assured her roommate, having experienced the same thoughts the previous year, "He's not really so bad, maybe a little bit too enthusiastic, but at least he's dedicated."
Admiration could be given to one so dedicated as their athletics instructor. True the majority of his students would often make excuses in order to save themselves from the torture of the extreme activities he scheduled for the course, but once accustomed and adjusted to his rate of speed, things tended to go very smoothly for all in the dynamic teacher's classes.
"In any case, the volley ball team could always use more muscle," she added with a fond smile, "Tryouts are being held Friday and the results will be posted outside the gym Monday afternoon."
Being a second year member of the team, Tenten had been allotted early admissions on the team; returning member tryouts having been held prior to the start of school to eliminate the hassle of having to wait along with the underclassmen. It allowed the captain to gage the integrity of the squad and calculate possible openings for new members.
She had to smirk as Ino lightly teased Sakura for her plans -- or at least what she had accidentally let slip of her plans -- for the evening. The blonde seemed relentless in her friendly assault. They must be REALY good friends. "The food here generally has a wide variety of dishes to please everyone, even some western dishes if you're into that kind of stuff."
"In any case, less talking and more walking," Tenten stated with a smile, reaching under her bed to grab her sketchbook -- she usually never went anywhere without it -- and slip it into her messenger bag as it was slung over her shoulders, "The day is wasting away with us standing in here."
With a wave of her arms, she ushered the two freshmen out the door, eager to find what the evening had in store for them.
